Dutch Oven Cinnamon Monkey Bread

Dutch Oven Cinnamon Monkey Bread

February 07, 2016

Monkey bread is the easiest dessert you can bake at camp, and it works just as well for breakfast. Five ingredients, ten minutes of prep, and the Dutch oven does the rest.

Prep: 10 minutes. Bake: 35 minutes. Serves: 8. Oven: 12 inch Dutch oven.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans refrigerated biscuit dough
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 stick butter, melted

Coals for 350°F

Use 25 briquettes for a 12 inch oven: 17 on the lid and 8 underneath. Baking needs most of the heat on top so the bottom does not burn.

Instructions

  1. Line the Dutch oven with foil and coat it with cooking spray.
  2. Cut each biscuit into quarters.
  3. Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a plastic bag. Drop in the biscuit pieces a handful at a time and shake to coat.
  4. Spread the coated pieces in the Dutch oven.
  5. Stir the brown sugar into the melted butter and pour it over the top.
  6. Cover and bake at 350°F for 35 minutes. Turn the oven and the lid a quarter turn in opposite directions every 10 to 15 minutes for even heat.
  7. Check at 30 minutes. It is done when the top is golden and the center pieces are no longer doughy.
  8. Lift it out by the foil, flip it onto a plate and pull it apart while it is warm.

Gear used

Checking at 30 minutes means lifting a lid covered in hot coals. The Lid Holder & Serving Stand ($39.99) lifts the lid with the coals in place and keeps ash out of the bread.

Starting from scratch? The 6-Piece Dutch Oven Set ($220.99) has the pre-seasoned 12 inch oven this recipe uses, plus the Lid Holder and three more tools.
